      By simplifying plot and language, as well as shortening all sentences, Conaway adapts three of Doyle's stories--"The Adventure of the Speckled Band," "The Red-headed League," and "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle"--to chapter-book format. Accompanied by charcoal illustrations, the text is choppy, but it manages to retain some of Doyle's flavor in the phrasing. Still, this is no substitute for the original.
