From the Pull Ahead Books: Forces of Nature series, this little bookintroduces hurricanes. Written in relatively short sentences and large type, the text presents what hurricanes are, when and where they occur, how people protect themselves and their property during a major storm, and related information, such as the locations of cyclones and typhoons. On nearly every page, color photosshow people preparing for hurricanes, storms in progress at sea and on land, and communities damaged by hurricanes. Appended information includes a glossary; short lists of books and Web sites; a chart for the commonly used Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale (showing category number, wind speed, and amount of damage); and a few miscellaneous hurricane facts. A serviceable introduction to hurricanes for younger readers.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2008, American Library Association.)

Each book defines a natural disaster in simple terms, describing how and why it occurs and the destruction it causes. Safety advice is also provided, though explanations can be overly simplistic. One or two stock photos, some with useful captions, accompany the manageable texts. "More About" and "Facts" sections offer more detailed information as well as comparisons and examples. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.
